Welcome to Deb Callahan Therapy

Everyone has a process and journey and when it gets interrupted by life’s traumas or issues, we sometimes need help making meaning of this experience and getting back on track to being who we want to be and living our life more fully. Developing a relationship with a compassionate, skilled therapist who can help you be present with what you are experiencing either from current life stressors or past traumas, can be an important part of this process. In my work I listen, guide, reflect back, and help increase your awareness of what your mind and body is experiencing. We will develop personal goals together to create more balance, tap into your resiliency and strength, expand your emotional skills and work towards increased emotional health and healing.

“My mission in life is not merely to survive but to thrive and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style” – Maya Angelou

About Deb

Deb Callahan headshot

I have been a licensed psychotherapist/ clinical social worker since 1992 and working in social services since 1988. I currently work with individuals, couples, families and groups in my private practice, provide clinical supervision to individuals and groups and teach as an adjunct professor at a local Philadelphia School of social work graduate program. I worked with adolescents and young adults at The Youth Health Empowerment Project (YHEP) for over a decade focusing on issues of homelessness, complex childhood trauma and PTSD, sexual health and a range of identity issues. I have also worked as a therapist at The Women’s Therapy Center and was the Director of Counseling at Women Organized Against Rape in Philadelphia (1992-1999), where I worked with adults, children and families, supervised staff and managed the counseling program. Prior to this I worked extensively in the areas of mental health and child welfare at various in-patient and out-patient facilities and the Boston Dept. of Social Services.

I have an integrated therapy approach drawing from a variety of therapy modalities. I am a certified Gestalt Therapist which allows me to help individuals become more present and aware of their body and emotions. I received 7 years of training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and inner child work to work through trauma. I also draw from mindfulness based practice and attachment theories. I obtained my MSW from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work in 1992 and a BA at Bowdoin College in 1987.

My background also includes being a musician and artist and I incorporate these skills and experiences when it is helpful to work through issues from a different perspective.
